Sometimes I get asked the above question by folks who are especially
new to the developer/programmer world. I realized that a friend has
had a nice blog entry on this for long

Most of the books on the list are either available online or,
available at affordable prices in Indian rupees. The ones that are
not, I'd strongly urge you to insist that your college library stock
them.
