*My experience:* For people wondering about how to start working on an open
source project, a simple advice is "Start out!"
Nothing else to tell (after Mr Chandan Kumar's detailed session)

I have had Mozilla Codebase sitting around in my system since April  2012
for no use. The only thing I never did was never to give up the idea that
the next day would be better and I'd find out something to work on. At
present, this is my activity:

Just because I have seen many questions from different people asking 'How
to start/how to choose/what language to use', I am saying this: "Hold that
interest which is in you now forever; there's no pride in giving up". As Mr
Chandan Kumar was saying,
