I think you can use this[1] as a guide to setup and start using IRC.
Once you start using you can pretty much get accustomed by using
it, staying online in channels and pinging in IRC if you have any
questions.

You might make mistakes at the beginning. But it's okay to make
mistakes and learn from them. :)
